From 1 December 2025, under Global Passport Seva 2.0, applicants upload an ICAO-compliant colour photo of 630 × 810 pixels with a white background, the face taking up 80-85% of the photo. Choose "India - Passport (Passport Seva)" and the photo is made at exactly that size.

A square 600 × 600 pixel JPG, no larger than 240 KB, with the head (chin to top of head) between 50% and 69% of the photo's height, on a white or off-white background. Choose "USA - Visa (DS-160)".

Choose a printed size, make the photo, then press Download 4×6 print sheet. Take the JPG to any photo shop or print it at 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) on photo paper at full size - do not let the printer "fit" or crop it - and cut along the light lines.

Drag the photo and use − / + until the top of the head touches the green line and the chin sits between the two red lines. A photo taken straight on from about 1.5 metres, with the shoulders showing, fits best.

The size, head height and background follow the official rules for each document, but the photo itself matters too: look straight at the camera, neutral expression, eyes open, no glasses glare, even light and no shadows. Rules change, so check the current instructions of the office or website you apply through.
